Franchise Spotlight: Anytime Fitness

Anytime Fitness operates a network of fitness centers offering convenient 24-hour access to members through a proprietary access and security system that allows reciprocal benefits between all centers.

Company Profile

Concept
Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, so members can work out “anytime.”
Service Model
Co-ed Fitness Club

What They Do:

Anytime Fitness operates a network of fitness centers offering convenient 24-hour access to members through a proprietary access and security system that allows reciprocal benefits between all centers. The franchise model focuses on providing one-on-one, small group, and large group training, coaching, and recovery services to members. Centers are typically 4,000 to 6,500 square feet and are required to be staffed for a minimum number of hours per week.

The business model emphasizes mandatory coaching services (called "Coaching Suite") that include personalized training programs for members. Revenue streams include monthly membership fees, pay-per-visit fees (often paid by employers or insurance companies), and coaching/personal training revenue. The concept differentiates itself through its 24/7 accessibility, reciprocal membership benefits across all locations, and integrated technology systems for member management and security.

Why we like it:

As we approach the festive period, there are going to be multiple gatherings where most of us will probably overindulge more than usual. That got us thinking: if we had $500k to $1m in the bank, which fitness franchise would we invest in?

Naturally, you’d gravitate toward the largest brand with the most global presence—Anytime Fitness. While Anytime Fitness isn’t cheap, with an initial setup cost of $397,537 to $973,142, it offers a strong, well-established network. Its light-labour operating model reduces much of the operational complexity, and we like the recurring nature of its revenue. The monthly membership structure is especially attractive for new joiners. As always, finding the right location is critical.

Anecdotally, several franchise owners have told us that Anytime Fitness keeps franchisees on a fairly tight leash (preferred equipment vendors, extensive monitoring, etc.). However, they also say the franchisor is supportive, and payback periods can range from two to five years. As mentioned, securing a winning location and developing strong relationships with local personal trainers—who are willing to train their clients at your gym—will be key to success.

Behind the numbers:

  • Proven Scale & Financial Performance: With 2,310 locations globally (2,298 franchised) and over 20 years of operation since 2002, Anytime Fitness is the market leader with demonstrated staying power. The average center generates $495,359 annually, while top-performing locations achieve $661,031, offering realistic payback periods of 2-5 years. The 24/7 access model with reciprocal membership benefits across all locations creates a compelling value proposition that drives member retention and recurring revenue.
  • Light-Labor Operating Model with Comprehensive Support: The franchise requires minimal staffing hours per week and leverages proprietary technology (Coaching Suite ecosystem, automated access control, club management software) to reduce operational complexity. Despite tight operational standards, franchisees receive extensive support including dedicated business consultants, 63+ hours of initial training, ongoing education programs (8-10 Vitals workshops annually), and $600/month in brand-level marketing—all while maintaining protected territories that prevent cannibalization from other Anytime Fitness locations.
  • Diversified Revenue Streams in Recession-Resistant Category: Beyond monthly membership fees ($290,396 average annually), franchisees generate additional income through personal training/coaching ($182,717 average), pay-per-visit programs with corporate/insurance partners ($22,247 average), and optional services like physical therapy partnerships. The fitness industry's recurring revenue nature provides cash flow predictability, while the mandatory Coaching Suite and SmartCoaching tools position franchisees to capture the growing demand for personalized fitness solutions—creating multiple paths to profitability beyond basic gym memberships.

Support Structure

Anytime Fitness provides comprehensive pre-opening support including site selection assistance, complimentary design services, and mandatory initial training (39 hours classroom + 24 hours on-the-job covering operations, marketing, technology, and coaching). Each franchisee is assigned a Franchise Business Consultant and receives the ProVision technology package with ongoing software support ($799/month). Post-opening, franchisees must earn 1,200 continuing education credits annually through various free training programs including Vitals workshops (offered 8-10 times yearly) and online courses. The franchisor manages a General Advertising Fund ($600/month minimum) that handles brand-level marketing, while franchisees must spend $600-$1,000 monthly on local advertising based on market tier. Additional support includes access to an Operations Manual, proprietary Coaching Suite technology ecosystem, secret shopper programs, and optional services like on-site relaunch training ($3,000) and physical therapy partnerships. All support is coordinated through AFLLC under a management agreement, with franchisees responsible for travel expenses and some specialized training fees.
